Exceedingly Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Tildon Easton, Alexandria, VA, circa 1841-1843, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated completely around the shoulder with a swag-and-hanging-tulip motif. Further decorated above on the front and reverse with three chain links. This jar features a capacity mark matching sherds excavated at the site of Easton's short-lived pottery as well as related brushed cobalt decoration to a number of partially-reconstructed vessels from this location. It is only the second intact example of Tildon Easton stoneware to be documented. Its slip decoration, related in style to pieces produced on Alexandria's Wilkes Street, includes small amounts of manganese dioxide, creating a purplish-brown spotting throughout. A significant recent discovery in Northern Virginia stoneware. A minor rim chip and a few minuscule rim nicks. A small chip to one handle. A minor chip to underside at edge. A faint fork-shaped line across underside forming a 4" line ascending base on front. H 10 1/4".
