Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "E* PARR," Elisha Parr, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1825, ovoid form with footed base, tall collar, two applied open handles at the shoulder, and a squared bunghole at the base; brush-decorated on the front and reverse with conjoined pairs of tulips emanating from scroll-leafed stems. Stylized flower blossoms to collar and a freehand cobalt stripe to rim and base of collar. Brushed highlights to handle terminals. Impressed on collar with the maker's mark of Elisha Parr, brother to David Parr, Sr., and a formative figure in the Baltimore stoneware craft. This cooler is the only example of the form signed by this maker that we are aware of. It is additionally one of less than ten pieces of stoneware bearing Elisha Parr's mark known. Restored handles and bung. A 2" x 2 1/2" restored section to rim. A 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" restored area near shoulder on reverse. H 15 1/2".
