Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spittoon with Profuse Stenciled Floral and Star Motifs, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1880, cylindrical form with recessed circular opening in top and carved oval opening in shoulder. Decorated around the top with six stenciled rose motifs featuring a star at the center of each and around the body with large stenciled floral motifs including the same star-centered rose. Among the most heavily-decorated spittoons known in the West Virginia / Western Pennsylvania stoneware potting tradition. Very nice condition. Small chips to opening in top. A small chip and a few minor nicks to opening at shoulder. A thin 3/4" flake at rim. H 5" ; Diam. 8 1/4".
