Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral and Dragonfly Motif, Stamped "SOMERSET. / POTTERSWORKS," MA origin, circa 1847-1882, cylindrical jug with wide, semi-squared spout, brush-decorated with a double-stemmed flowering plant surrounded by dashes and flanked by two dragonflies. Impressed above three times with a five-gallon capacity mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity marks. A thin, inverted Y-shaped crack to right of decoration. Staining to surface. Some light surface wear. A 3" crack on underside, continuing 1/2" up base. A small piece of adhered clay below decoration. H 18".
