Outstanding Glazed Redware Lidded Crock with Manganese Decoration, Inscribed "OS + AW," Mid-Atlantic origin, 19th century, cylindrical crock with incised banding and ribbed strap handles, the lead-glazed surface decorated with elaborate manganese sponging and the brushed manganese initials, "OS + AW," likely commemorating a wedding or serving as a signature of two cooperative potters, applied over a vibrant green-to-light-orange surface. Original lead-glazed lid features heavily-tooled banding and sponged manganese decoration over an orange ground. Crock in excellent condition with minimal wear and a few minuscule base nicks. Lid with a 1 1/2" chip to flange on underside, which appears at least in part to have occurred in the making, as well as two other minor chips to flange. H (including lid) 7 1/2" ; Diam. (at rim) 7 1/2".
