Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Pittston," attributed to Evan R. Jones, Pittston, PA, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering vine. Slip-trailed above with the town name, "Pittston," underscored by a large number 5. The slip-trailed application of the jug's town of origin and capacity are highly unusual, as is the style of decoration seen on this jug. Presumably a specially-made or ordered piece, this work is also the largest Evan R. Jones jug that we have ever seen. Includes old wooden stopper. Essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over spout chip, a recessed in-the-firing contact mark to left of 5, and some fry to cobalt. H 17 3/4".
