Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large flowering plant bearing three tulips, a fourth splayed blossoms, wavy vertical strokes, and vertical spots, all flanked by graduate leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark and handle terminals. Some fry to cobalt. An in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder area on front. Two small chips to interior of rim. Some exfoliation above one handle and faint surface scaling to shoulder on reverse. A chip and two short, in-the-firing fissures to opposite handle. Various Y-shaped surface lines throughout, not visible on interior and possibly in-the-firing. An approximately 9 1/2" thin, vertical crack to right of decoration on front, not visible on interior. H 13 7/8".
