Fine Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Bellarmine Jug, probably Frechen, Germany, 16th or 17th century, highly-ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated on the neck with a raised bearded mask above three raised medallions around body. Surface covered in a reddish-brown iron oxide slip with cobalt highlights to mask and central medallion. Provenance: Consigned from the Netherlands. Shallow chipping around base. Some wear to mask, medallions, spout, and handle. A faint and minor, 1 1/2" Y-shaped line on reverse, possibly in-the-firing. H 8".
