Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Frog Mug with Cold-Painted Decoration, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, circa 1885, flared mug with footed base, tooled shoulder, and ribbed strap handle, the interior decorated with a molded and applied figure of a frog with incised detail to feet. Surface covered in Albany slip and incised with the poem, "I love my native land. / Land of swamps and bogs. / I am the leader of her band / Louisville sweet land of Bully frogs." Original green cold-painted decoration to frog. Rim and base with cold-painted floral decoration, probably original to the mug. This example features the desirable "land of Bully frogs" poem, perhaps the most elaborate inscription known on the Kirkpatricks' popular frog mug form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found by the consignor in Maryland. A 1 1/8" x 1/4" reglued sliver at rim, adjacent to a small chip. A second 5/8" chip on interior of rim, with a 1/2" piece reglued inside of it. H 3" ; Diam. (across opening) 3 3/8".
